Queens Hotel Portsmouth - one of those hotels of former grandeur which is gradually being improved. Bar, a sea view if you ask, close to crazy golf, a green to play football on, restaurants and bars around the corner. If the weather's nice, it's a pleasant place to be. Buy a kite.

If your priority is what's most appealing for the kids, Brockenhurst/ Lyndhurst are within spitting distance of Paultons Park and offer good accommodation.

Get out in the forest; hire bikes or look up what Liquid Logistics offer at Beaulieu.

Or you could all die slowly and unpleasantly in Portsmouth.

Why on earth were you drinking in Winchester before the Southampton game?

Slipping the ob?

No, one of our party insisted a better pub was at the top of that fucking hill, it wasn't though, it was shit, we were better off staying in a pub that had strippers at the bottom

Check Gun Wharf Quays or Old Portsmouth in Portsmouth, a lot going on and nice waterfront. Otherwise Winchester is a good bet. Don't know specific hotels these days, but lived in Southsea for a good few years.

If you want a nice area and are in no rush, try the new forest not too far from there.

Oh and if you're looking for things to do with the kids, Winchester is also handy for Marwell Zoo.
